In Year 1, the children will take the statutory phonics screening check in the summer term. Therefore, it is crucial that a consistent approach to the teaching of phonics is used. We deliver phonics using the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics scheme.
Please check your ClassDojo for:
RWI phonics, TT Rock Stars and reading homework.
Home Learning
Home learning is set each week by the class teacher on ClassDojo. This will consist of reading, phonics and maths and is checked each week. Reading at home is extremely important, and we would like all children to read at home at least 3 times per week.
Please don't forget that if you have any questions or queries, then please contact your class teacher via ClassDojo between 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Spring Term 1
For the Spring 1 half-term we will be enjoying the topic ‘What is our school made of?'.
In this topic, we will be super scientists. We will distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. We will also identify and name a variety of materials, including wood, metal, fabric, plastic and paper. We will describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials, and we will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.
In Design and Technology, we will learn to join fabrics together using different methods. We will also learn to sew and join fabrics using a running stitch. We will learn how to make a product more appealing using a template to create a design and add it to our own hand-stitched pouch.
We will also explore the five different food groups and what it means to have a balanced diet. We will understand which food products can be unhealthy for you and which nutrients living things need to create energy, grow and develop.
In English, we will be completing lots of fun learning activities based on the stories of ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey and ‘Freddy’s Teddies’ by Peter Melnyczuk. The children will be retelling and later innovating these stories. They will also use story maps and differentiated texts to help them write these narratives. We will be learning to plan our writing, breaking it up into beginning, middle and end, as well as correctly using their just do it rules! As well as going on a journey into the world of narratives, the children will also explore non-fiction texts and write instructions about how to make a Traction Man. We can't wait to see what the children achieve!
Click on the image below to listen to the Traction Man story:
In Maths, our clever Mathematicians are learning about multiplication and division. They will also be developing their knowledge of statistics, length and height, properties of shape and fractions. The children will also use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to solve problems and challenges. If you need any support with helping your child at home, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo.
We will also be learning about programming and robot algorithms in computing. The children will use given commands in different orders to investigate how the order affects the outcome. The children will also learn about design in programming. The children will develop artwork and test it for use in a program. The children will design algorithms and then test those algorithms as programs and debug them.
To support your child further with their reading skills, please click here to watch Read, Write, Inc's engaging phonics videos. Your child will be familiar with the routines used in Read, Write, Inc.
Do you love to listen to stories? Click on the image below to take you to a fabulous website where you can listen to a variety of stories read by different authors.
How can you help your child at home? Check out our useful links… But be prepared to use your MAGIC learning behaviours to help you to tackle tricky problems!
Thank you for taking the time to read our class page. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to speak to the Incredibles team.
