The Maths Excellence Programme

Helping every student to see what’s possible with maths

We’re proud to share that Co-op Academies Trust has received almost £1 million in funding to help make maths even better across our schools. The funding comes from the national Maths Excellence Fund, supported by the Co-op Foundation, and will run from 2024 to 2026.

This investment will help us give students new opportunities to build confidence and enjoyment in maths — and help teachers develop even stronger skills to support them.

What the programme means for our students

The Maths Excellence Programme is all about helping every young person reach their potential in maths. It brings together expert teachers, graduate specialists, and new technology to make lessons engaging, challenging, and inspiring.

Students will benefit from:

  • Extra support and challenge through small-group sessions and one-to-one tutoring.

  • Revision days and workshops such as our “Hit the Mark” events, where students from across our academies come together to learn, revise, and celebrate success.

  • Maths clubs and online learning tools like Axiom Maths Clubs and Sparx Maths to make learning interactive and fun.

  • Trips and careers activities showing how maths opens doors to future opportunities — from engineering to finance to data science.

Our goal is to help more students achieve top GCSE grades and continue their maths journey to A-level, university, and beyond.

Supporting our teachers too

Alongside student support, the programme helps our teachers grow their expertise. Our Maths Directors, Jay Timotheus and Joanne Chaloner, work with Specialist Executive Maths Teacher Natalie Wright and a team of graduate specialists. Together, they share best practice, run workshops, and create new resources so that every maths classroom across the Trust benefits.

Working together for lasting impact

This programme shows what’s possible when Co-op organisations work together for the benefit of young people.

"With the support of the Co-op Foundation and nearly £1 million from the Maths Excellence Fund, we can bring real, lasting change to how we deliver maths education across our academies."

Jay Timotheus, Director of Maths

This partnership helps us make sure every student has the chance to excel. By recruiting top maths graduates, enhancing teacher training and using new technology, we’ll give our students the skills and support they need to succeed.
